Well, it's been done. And I like the idear :D

But he wants me to pay $1350 for the prototype, and another $130 for a spare axle to take it out on Fordyce and Rubicon. mmmmm....nope.

Then I asked "Honey....can you make me one?"

He has some different ideas, I'll let him explain :D

Here is the thread with the original design:

http://www.hummerxclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=9933

Tell me what you think.....but before you say straight axle...the purpose for this Hummer exercise is to create an upgradeable front end that is :

a) Cast Iron
b) larger (8.8 vs 7.6)
c) and has a wide range of gear ratio options (higher than 4:56)
d) mostly junk yard parts = cheep cheep

I'm not willing YET to give up my IFS ride and turning radius, and I want to pretend I'm like Shannon Campbell, and can make IFS a viable option.

Don't laugh, I'm serious!

Bebe,

I think it's a great idea! It will be stronger and let you have a lower gear ratio. But does sound like a big task.

I'd pay the man. Anything else will take hours and hours of fab time and could end up costing more. He seems to have a good plan and has thought everything through. A soild axle swap would cost more and would not met your goals. Also, I would cut off 3000-5000lbs of Hummer and make it into a HumBuggy, my .02... :) I'm almost done with my sawzall if you want to borrow it.

Do it, sounds like a good set up. The price isn't that bad either. If it doesn't work you can always strait axel it with 60's and 42's.

Glad to hear you are moving forward with this, looks like fun. Sierra Trek again?
