Travel Management Update Tahoe National Forest December, 2009
To everyone interested in the Travel Management Analysis for the Tahoe National Forest:
I’d like to provide you all with an update regarding our progress on the Travel Management Analysis. As you know, a Draft Environmental Impact Statement was issued for public comment in September, 2008.
We received over 7,000 comments. Several of those comments questioned some of our data. So we went back to older NEPA (National Environmental Planning Act) documents to verify road and trail status decisions. A review of these earlier decisions caused us to revise the numbers in our analysis in regard to National Forest System roads and trails and unauthorized roads and trails.
We also reviewed the current status of roads and trails across private land and found that some of these did not have valid rights-of-way which we are also correcting in our analysis.
A Supplemental Draft Environmental Impact Statement (SDEIS) will be released later this winter so that you all will have an opportunity comment on this new information. There will be a 45-day comment period for this SDEIS. As we refine our timeline, we will be sending you more information in 2010.
We thank you all for your participation in this process and wish you a happy holiday season. If you would like to be removed from this mailing list, please reply back with your request.
Sincerely, Tom Quinn Tahoe National Forest Supervisor
Ann Westling Tahoe National Forest Public Affairs Officer (530) 478-6205
